1. 一 年 之 計 在 於 春 (What’s Done in Spring Determines the Year)
-春 天 是 一 年 中 最 好 的 季 節,在 這 時 做 計 劃 最 好,就 是 一 年 之 計 在 於 春 的 道 理。
→ In the Chinese lunar calendar, the year begins with spring. Crops must be planted in spring if one expects a harvest in the fall. One must make sound plans in the beginning in order to recap results later.
2. 一 日 之 計 在 於 晨
-早 上 是 一 天 最 好 的 時 間, 要 充 份 做 好 整 天 的 計 劃,就 是 一 日 之 計 在 於 晨。
3. 一 分 耕 耘,一 分 收 穫 (One reaps only as much as he sows)
-很 認 真 的 準 備 考 試, 就 能 得 到 好 成 績 做 回 報, 這 就 是 一 分 耕 耘一 分 收 穫 的 道 理。
→ The results are directly proportional to the effort. You get out of it what you put into it.
4. 天 下 無 難 事,只 怕 有 心 人。(There is nothing difficult under the sun, if only one has determination.)
-你 不 要 怕 困 難,只 要 用 心 去 做,那 就 是 天 下 無 難 事,只 怕 有 心 人。
→ If only one is determined and puts forth his best effort, in the end he will succeed. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
5. 有 借 有 還,再 借 不 難。 (To return what one borrows makes it easy to borrow again.)
-跟 人 家 借 東 西,講 好 時 間 就 要 準 時 還,有 借 有 還,再 借 不 難,所 以 下 次 再 借 就 容 易 多 了。
→ If one borrows and then returns or repays by the stipulated time, the lender will be more apt to assist again in time of need.
6. 吃 得 苦 中 苦,方 為 人 上 人。(One must endure the bitterest struggle to enjoy the sweetest success.)
-做 事 情 不 要 怕 吃 苦,就 能 成 功,那 就 是 吃 得 苦 中 苦,方 為 人 上 人。
→ In order to reach the heights of fame, one must endure the frustrations and pains of the struggle to develop his talents.
7. 遠 在 天 邊,近 在 眼 前。(As far as the edge of the world; as close as in front of your eyes.)
-爸 爸 一 直 找 不 到 他 的 眼 鏡,原 來 在 他 頭 上,媽 媽 笑 著 說 遠 在 天 邊,近 在 眼 前。
→ What you are looking for is right in front of your eyes. There’s no need to look farther.
8. 初 生 之 犢 不 怕 虎。(A newborn calf fears not the tiger.)
-小 孩 不 看 馬 路,就 要 往 前 走, 有 點 危 險,真 是 初 生 之 犢 不 怕 虎。
→ As they come out into the world, the young are fearless in their desire to taste of the world but lack the wisdom of experience.
9. 只 聽 樓 梯 響,不 見 人 下 來。(The stairway creaks but noone comes down.)
-我 告 訴 媽 媽 我 每 天 會 摺 棉 被,可 是 我 都 沒 做 到,爸 爸 笑 著 說,只 聽 樓 梯 響,不 見 人 下 來。
→ All talk but no action.
10. 平 時 不 燒 香,臨 時 抱 佛 腳。(To forget the daily offerings and kiss Buddha’s hem in an emergency).
-平 常 不 復 習 功 課,考 試 前 一 天,才 不 睡 覺 準 備 考 試,平 時 不 燒 香,臨 時 抱 佛 腳。
→ This describes man-made emergencies due to lack of preparation which leaves one grasping at straws.
11. 天 無 絕 人 之 路。(Heaven never leaves a man with absolutely no way out.)
-雖 然 我 沒 拿 到 這 個 工 作,可 是 如 果 我 再 試 幾 家,我 一 定 會 有 機 會,天 無 絕 人 之 路 真 有 道 裡。
→ Somewhere there is always a way to be found out of one’s difficulties.
12. 天 下 烏 鴉 一 般 黑。(All crows are black)
-男 生 都 喜 歡 劈 腿,天 下 烏 鴉 一 般 黑。
→ Black denotes evil. Evil persons should be expected to do evil. What can you expect from one of his kind?
13. 前 人 種 樹,後 人 乘 涼。(One generation plants trees; the next enjoys the shade.)
-這 個 社 團 的 社 長 已 經 設 立 好 規 矩,後 面 的 人 好 好 遵 守,就 能 做 得 好,真 是 前 人 種 樹,後 人 乘 涼。
→ The previous generation works hard and leaves the fruit of their labor for the next generation to enjoy.
14. 生 米 已 成 熟 飯。(The rice is cooked.)
- 報 告 已 經 交 給 老 師 了,但 發 現 有 錯 字,沒 得 後 悔,真 是 生 米 已 成 熟 飯。
→ What is done is now a fact to be reckoned with.
15. 情 人 眼 裡 出 西 施。(A lover’s eyes sees Sih Shih.)
-我 的 朋 友 覺 得 他 的 男 朋 友 是 世 界 上 最 好 看 的 人,真 是 情 人 眼 裡 出 西 施。
→ Sih Shih was a famous beauty of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) from the Kingdom of Yue. A woman always appears beautiful in the eyes of her lover.
16. 天 機 不 可 洩 漏。(The will of heaven cannot be revealed.)
-我 烤 的 蛋 糕 太 好 吃 了,大 家 都 要 食 譜,我 笑 著 說,天 機 不 可 洩 漏。
→ Tien-Chi means arrangements made in Heaven for the destinies of the mortals. This phrase is used to indicate that something is secret and cannot be passed on to other ears.
17. 江 山 易 改,本 性 難 移。(Man’s nature is more difficult to change than mountains and rivers.)
-他 的 脾 氣 很 不 好,怎 麼 跟 他 講 都 講 不 聽,真 是 江 山 易 改,本 性 難 移。
→ It is extremely difficult to reroute rivers and move mountains, but the task seems simple compared to trying to get men to reform themselves and eliminate their natural foibles.
18. 大 難 不 死,必 有 後 福。(When one has survived a calamity, good fortune must follow.)
-朋 友 發 生 車 禍 後,恢 復 得 很 快,真 是 大 難 不 死,必 有 後 福。
→ Good luck must follow the bad.
19. 一 心 不 能 二 用。(One cannot do two things at once.)
-我 想 看 電 腦 和 做 功 課,結 果 錯 一 堆,媽 媽 說,一 心 不 能 二 用。
→ One must concentrate on what he’s doing. Otherwise, it’s impossible to do a good job. It’s hard to sip and and blow with one breath.
20. 一 寸 光 陰 一 寸 金,寸 金 難 買 寸 光 陰。(An inch of time is an inch of gold, but an inch of gold will not buy an inch of time.)
-媽 媽 說 我 要 把 握 時 間,因 為 時 間 過 了,多 少 錢 都 買 不 回 來,真 是 一 寸 光 陰 一 寸 金,寸 金 難 買 寸 光 陰。
→ Time can be converted to money, but not vice versa. One should be cautious not to throw away his time on frivolity.
21. 牛 頭 不 對 馬 嘴。(An ox’s head doesn’t fit a horse’s mouth.)
-爸 爸 問 我 吃 飽 了 沒,我 卻 說 我 剛 下 課,真 是 牛 頭 不 對 馬 嘴。
→ The reply doesn’t answer the question; the essay doesn’t match the title.
22. 取 人 之 長,補 己 之 短。(Take other’s virtues to make up for one’s failings.)
-我 學 習 姐 姐 的 優 點 來 補 我 的 缺 點,真 是 取 人 之 長,補 己 之 短。
→ One may have many shortcomings, but learning from one’s superiors may offset them.
23. 無 風 不 起 浪。(There will be no waves without wind.)
-他 會 不 受 歡 迎,因 為 他 對 人 不 好,真 是 無 風 不 起 浪。
→ Criticism, dispute, quarrels, and discord may not appear justified, but he who cares to look will always be able to find a cause. Where there is smoke, there is fire.
24. 百 聞 不 如 一 見。(Seeing once is better than hearing a hundred times.)
-我 聽 我 媽 媽 講 說 牛 肉 麵 很 好 吃,我 今 天 一 吃 果 然 百 聞 不 如 一 見。
→ Repeated descriptions cannot convey a fraction of the impression of seeing once with one’s own eyes. Seeing is believing.
25. 求 人 不 如 求 己。(To ask of others is not as good as to ask of oneself.)
-媽 媽 叫 爸 爸 去 買 菜,但 爸 爸 偷 懶 不 去,媽 媽 生 氣 的 說,求 人 不 如 求 己。
→ It is much better to depend on oneself than to ask help of others.
26. 少 壯 不 努 力,老 大 徒 傷 悲。(If youthful years are not well spent, maturity will bring but grief.)
-年 青 時 不 好 好 學 習,到 老 就 要 後 悔,真 是 少 壯 不 努 力,老 大 徒 傷 悲。
→ If in youth one idles one’s time away in frivolity, later years will teach one to regret it, but then it will be too late.
27. 麻 雀 雖 小,五 臟 俱 全。(A sparrow is small, but it has a complete set of internal organs.)
-我 姐 姐 宿 舍 雖 小,但 該 有 的 都 有,就 是 麻 雀 雖 小,五 臟 俱 全。
→ Smallness is not necessarily indicative of deficiency. A smaller version of something may be just as complete and self-sufficient as a larger version.
-春 天 是 一 年 中 最 好 的 季 節,在 這 時 做 計 劃 最 好,就 是 一 年 之 計 在 於 春 的 道 理。
